Top 6 Things to Do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

The town of La Fortuna is best known for its amazing views of Arenal Volcano and its relaxing natural hot springs. This beautiful part of Costa Rica is a must-see if you’re traveling to the country!

This post lists some of the top things to do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica.

Top things to do in La Fortuna, Costa Rica

1. Relax in the hot springs

La Fortuna is known for its hot springs, so you definitely need to spend some time relaxing in them when you visit! There are plenty of options, from luxury experiences like Tabacon Resort and Spa (starting at $75 USD for a day pass) to more casual spots like Termalitas de Arenal (about $10 USD for a day pass).

For backpackers on a budget, there is a free hot spring near Tabacon Resort that is popular with locals. This is also a great place to go in the evening – but bring some candles because it gets dark! If you take a taxi there, it is best to plan with your driver what time you want them to pick you up, as you may not have service or wifi once you arrive. This is especially true if you go after dark – you don’t want to be stuck walking back to town in the middle of the night!

2. Stroll through Arenal Volcano National Park

You only have to pay one entrance fee ($15 USD) to access both the volcano and the lake sections at Arenal Volcano National Park. Try to walk quietly for a bit – we saw so many more birds and animals when we did this.

3. Take a sloth tour

See one of Costa Rica’s most charismatic species in the wild! Bogarin Trail is a good option close to town. The animals can be hard for the inexperienced to spot, so you might want to consider going with a guide. Entry to the trail costs $15 USD per person, or you can pay $50 USD per person for a guided tour.

For a better chance to spot animals, a good tip is to avoid the middle of the day (when animals tend to be less active) and try to go in the early morning or late afternoon instead.

4. Visit a waterfall

Get your camera ready at Cantarata La Fortuna! This 70-meter waterfall is a great place to take pictures and go for a swim. Tickets are $18 USD for adults. It is a bit of a walk to get there, but definitely worth it for the view!

5. Take a coffee or chocolate tour

Learn more about Costa Rica’s most famous local delicacies with a tour and tasting experience, and get some souvenirs for your friends and family back home at the same time!

Where to stay in La Fortuna

Backpackers: I loved my stay at Santafe Hostel! The owners are so nice, and the atmosphere really feels like a home away from home. They do have several pets, so you should like animals if you stay here (it was a plus for me!).

Transportation between La Fortuna and Montverde

For transport between La Fortuna and Monteverde, I recommend the Jeep Boat Jeep shuttle. They offer door-to-door service and a scenic boat ride across Lake Arenal for $25 USD. Contrary to the name, the land transportation is not a Jeep but rather a comfortable shuttle bus.
