Top 5 Things to Do in Pisa, Italy

Pisa is a city in the Tuscany region of Italy. Most people know it for the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa, which has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the World. As amazing as it is, there is more to Pisa than just the tower! This post lists some of the top things to do during your visit to Pisa, Italy.

Top things to do in Pisa

Here are some of my top things to do in Pisa!

See (or even climb) the Leaning Tower of Pisa

Let’s get the obvious one out of the way – the one thing you absolutely have to do in Pisa is see the iconic tower that bears the city’s name.

The tower is located in the Piazza del Duomo. The outside can be viewed for free, but you can also climb the tower between 9 am and 6 pm for about 25 euros. The views from the top are nice, but be aware that you might have to face a very long line to get in!

Admire the other attractions in the Piazza del Duomo

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is not the only impressive historic monument in Pisa. In addition to the tower, the Piazza del Duomo contains the Pisa Cathedral, the Pisa Baptistery, and the Camposanto Monumentale (or Monumental Cemetery). All of these monuments are stunning in their own right, so be sure to appreciate them as well as the tower!

Walk along the Mura de Pisa

This walk was one of my favorite things that I did in Pisa! The walk along the wall was really pretty, with some cool views of the Tower and other parts of the city. It was also not very crowded when I went, which was nice. The city asks that you not take photographs from the wall to protect the privacy of the people living nearby, which was actually refreshing given all the people vying for their Leaning Tower of Pisa photo-ops in the main square.

Visit the Orto Botanico dell’Università di Pisa

Another of my favorite things to see in Pisa was the Orto Botanico dell’Università di Pisa, or the botanical gardens owned by the University of Pisa. It was pretty and peaceful here, and I really enjoyed walking around looking at all the plants. The garden also had a museum that explained its history, and the wax plant models contained in the museum were especially impressive.

Take pictures in front of the Keith Haring mural

On another note from all of the historical monuments in Pisa is a mural by Keith Haring. This was fun to see and a great place to take pictures! It was cool to see a more modern side of Pisa.

Where to stay in Pisa

I stayed at the Pisa Train Station Hostel, which is, as the name suggests, conveniently located near Pisa’s train station. I walked straight to the hostel from the airport, which took me about 20 minutes. If you have a lot of luggage or prefer not to walk, you can also take a train from the airport to the Pisa train station.

The hostel itself was pretty cozy and equipped with a kitchen and lockers – two of the main things I look for in a hostel. There were only two bathrooms, which could be a little inconvenient but wasn’t too much of a problem since most of the people staying there spent the days elsewhere. The hostel didn’t serve breakfast (although there was a coin-operated coffee machine), but there was a place right across the street with great coffee and pastries!

I really enjoyed my time visiting Pisa, and I hope this post gives you some ideas for your next trip to this beautiful city in Italy!
