Drøbak is a small town about 45 minutes south of Oslo by bus, which makes it a nice place for a day trip if you are staying in the city! This post lists some of the fun things you can do in the pretty little town of Drøbak, Norway.

Fun things to do in Drøbak, Norway

Here are some of my favorite things to do in Drøbak!

1. Go for a walk along the coast

Drøbak is located right on Olso Fjord, so the scenery is gorgeous. I highly suggest taking some time just to walk around, explore the coastline, and take some photos of the sunset over the water. This area is so pretty, and it feels very calm and relaxing after spending a few days in Oslo city.

I also found the streets and houses near the waterfront to be quite charming!

2. Explore Oscarsborg Fortress

Oscarborg Fortress is just a five-minute ferry ride from Drøbak and is a great destination for history buffs. Here, you can book guided tours and learn more about the story of this 19th-century fortress, which played an important part in WWII, at the Oscarborg Museum.

However, Oscarborg is not just known for its military history. There is an art gallery and several restaurants on the island, and a hotel if you’d like to stay overnight. In the summer, the area around the fortress is used to hold theater and opera productions as well as concerts, and the island also features hiking trails, beaches, and a playground for kids.

The ferry from Drøbak to Oscarborg Fortress runs all year round. An adult round-trip ticket costs 110 NOK. The ferry schedule can be found here.

3. Check out the Drøbak Aquarium

The Drøbak Aquarium showcases the sea life of Oslo Fjord. There is quite a lot packed in here for a small aquarium, and I highly recommend checking it out! According to their website, this is the only aquarium in eastern Norway.

The Drøbak aquarium has lots of interesting information in both Norwegian and English about the species kept there. Personally, I love learning about ocean life, so this aquarium was a major highlight for me!

4. Visit the Christmas House

Drøbak is also known as the birthplace of Santa Claus (in case you were wondering about the Santa street sign you may have seen while walking along the coast) and reportedly receives over 15,000 letters to Santa every year. One of the better-known attractions in this town is the Tregaardens Christmas House, where you can feel the spirit of the holiday season almost all year long!

Open March through December, this Christmas House is a great place to buy Christmas-themed gifts and cards and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Getting from Oslo to Drøbak via public transportation

Getting from Oslo to Drøbak using public transportation is quite straightforward. You can take the 500 bus from Oslo Bus Terminal near the Grønland metro station. The 500 bus runs regularly throughout the day, but you will need a ticket for zone 2S. You can buy a ticket on the Ruter app or at the Narvesen in the terminal.

Once on the bus, you can get off at any of the last few stops – anything after Drøbak kirke should be fine!

I hope this post gives you some ideas for fun things to do in Drøbak, Norway! You can also check out this post to get inspiration about more day trips you can take from Oslo.
